Zakynthian home cooking in Dafni

Daily dishes: Eggs with Fries & Feta and Linguine with Basil Pesto & Cream.

About us

Dionysakis is a mageirio, a Greek cookshop where the day’s dishes wait in the window, serving food from the island of Zakynthos in Dafni, Athens. Brothers Nikolas and Dionysis Kokkalis cook fresh every day, with Zakynthos olive oil and bread they bake themselves. Eat in or at the tables on the pedestrian street, take away from the window, or order delivery.

A short glossary of Zakynthian food

Sartsa, polpettes, ladotyri: the words you will find on our menu. A short guide to the food of Zakynthos, an Ionian island with a strong Venetian past, from Dionysakis in Dafni, Athens.

Sartsa (σάρτσα)
stew
The classic Zakynthian stew: beef slow-cooked in tomato sauce with garlic, vinegar and ladotyri cheese, served with pasta. You will also find it as eggs sartsa, and with rabbit or chicken.
Polpettes (πολπέτες)
meatballs
Zakynthian meatballs. The name comes from the Italian polpette, one of the island’s Venetian legacies. Here they come with tomato sauce and fries.
Ladotyri (λαδοτύρι)
cheese
The island’s cheese, which gives sartsa its character. At Dionysakis we also grate it over fries with tomato sauce.
Zakynthos olive oil
olive oil
The only oil in our kitchen. In the salads, in the stews, everywhere.
Giomati (γιομάτη)
word
“Full” in the Zakynthian dialect. It is how the Kokkalis brothers describe their cooking: «Ζακυνθινή κουζίνα γιομάτη», hearty Zakynthian food.
Frigania (φρυγανιά)
dessert
The island’s dessert. You will find it among the desserts on the menu.
